I get it! Navigating a job interview can send your blood pressure through the roof!
You know you’re qualified, but the stakes are high, and the pressure is on. All eyes are on you - or at least that’s what it feels like.
Whether you’re looking to advance in your career or secure a higher-paying position, nailing the interview is critical. I want to share some tried-and-true job interview tips I’ve learned over the years as a senior corporate Recruiter that can make a world of difference in helping you stand out and land the role you deserve.
1. Do Your Research on the Company and Role
We’ve all heard the advice: "Do your research." But let’s dig a bit deeper into what that really means and why it’s so important. When I say research, I’m not just talking about skimming the company’s website the night before. I’m talking about a deep dive into the company’s mission, values, culture, and recent news. Open a Google Doc and jot down some key facts. Include anything relevant to your role and how you see yourself adding value to the growth of the organization. This level of understanding allows you to align your experience and aspirations with what the company is looking for, showing them that you’re not just another candidate—you’re the candidate. I need you to really take this first tip seriously because it’s gold.
Imagine walking into an interview and being able to speak knowledgeably about the company’s latest product launch, how it aligns with its mission, and why your skills make you a perfect fit to help them achieve their goals. That’s the kind of preparation that sets you apart. It’s not just about impressing your interviewers with facts but about demonstrating that you’ve taken the time to understand who they are and how you can contribute.
And for bonus points, please don’t stop at the company. Dive into the role itself. If possible, connect with someone already in the position or a similar role. LinkedIn is a fantastic tool for this. Understanding the day-to-day responsibilities and the challenges others in that role face can help you tailor your responses and show that you’re ready to hit the ground running. It’s all about showing that you’re not only qualified but also genuinely excited about the opportunity.
Is this work? Yes! Will it be worth it? ABSOLUTELY!
2. Practice - Run Through a Mock Interview
Let’s be real: no one likes the idea of rehearsing for an interview. It can feel awkward, especially if you’re practicing with a friend or mentor who knows you well. But here’s the thing—practice makes progress…and sometimes perfection. The more you run through potential questions and answers, the more confident and polished you’ll become.
I work closely with my clients to prepare for interviews that lead to offers. We run through mock interviews where I ask them the tough questions they might face because, after conducting these job interviews for over a decade across various organizations in various industries, I have a pretty good idea. By doing this, they walk away with clarity and confidence, ready to consistently knock it out of the park. It’s not just about rehearsing the right answers but about getting comfortable with the interview process itself. When you’re prepared, it shows, and confidence is something interviewers can spot a mile away.
Consider this: How you present yourself in a mock interview can reveal areas where you might need to tweak your responses or improve your delivery. Perhaps you’re over-explaining or maybe you’re not providing enough detail. Practicing in a low-stakes environment with someone you know allows you to refine your answers, work on your timing, and eliminate any nervous habits that might detract from your message.
So, whether you practice with a friend, a mentor, or a career coach like myself, take the time to do it right. It’s an investment that pays off in the form of a more confident, articulate, and poised interview performance which increases your chances of moving forward to the offer stage.
3. Be Mindful of Your Body Language
They say actions speak louder than words, and this couldn’t be more true in a job interview. While what you say is important, how you say it—and how you carry yourself—can be just as critical. Your body language is a non-verbal cue that interviewers pick up on, often without even realizing it. It can convey confidence, enthusiasm, and professionalism—or it can send the wrong message entirely.
Let’s start with posture. Sitting up straight isn’t just about looking good—it’s about projecting confidence and readiness. Slouching, on the other hand, can make you appear disinterested or unsure of yourself. When you walk into that room, walk tall. When you sit, sit like you belong there. It’s a simple thing, but it sets the tone for the entire conversation.
Eye contact is another biggie. Maintaining good eye contact shows that you’re engaged and confident. But be mindful—there’s a balance to strike here. You don’t want to come across as intense or intimidating, so aim for a natural, steady gaze that conveys interest and attentiveness. If it’s a panel interview, be sure to make contact with the entire panel as you answer questions. I’ve conducted some interviews where that wasn’t the case and it was certainly noticed by all.
And then there’s your facial expressions. A warm smile at the right moment can create a connection with your interviewer, making you more memorable. Please also be aware of any unconscious expressions that might give off the wrong vibe. For example, frowning or looking overly serious can make you seem unapproachable. Instead, try to maintain a pleasant, approachable expression that invites conversation.
In essence, your body language should reinforce the confidence and enthusiasm you bring to the interview. It’s not just about saying the right things—it’s about embodying them, too.
