Have you ever felt like you’re meant for more in your career, but you’re just not sure what steps you need to take to get there? I’ve felt like that in my career and I regularly work with clients who can also relate. Many women find themselves in this exact spot—successful by all external measures, yet unsatisfied and considering a change.
Let’s chat for a moment about the steps I suggest to help you move forward with confidence, and start aligning your career with the life you desire
.
Step 1: Acknowledge the Need for Change
First, it’s important to recognize you’re not satisfied where you are. Instead of dismissing these feelings, give yourself permission to do a little soul-searching and determine what’s missing. Accepting the fact that it’s okay to want more is the first step toward creating a career that truly fulfills you.
Step 2: Reflect on Your Career Journey
Before making any major decisions, grab a journal (you can find some of my favorites here) and take some time to reflect on your career so far. What roles, if any, have brought you the most satisfaction? What tasks or responsibilities make you feel energized? This reflection will help you identify what you love and what you want more of in your future career.
Step 3: Clarify Your Strengths and Passions
Clarity is key, so I also want you to get clear on your strengths and passions. What are you naturally good at? One of the first steps when working with my 1:1 clients is to complete a strengths assessment, which serves as a solid foundation for us to step into clarity and confidence. By identifying these key elements, you’ll be better equipped to pursue a career that aligns with both your abilities and your interests.
Step 4: Explore New Opportunities
With your strengths and passions in mind, start exploring new career opportunities. Whether it’s researching roles within your current industry that offer more of what you love or considering a career pivot into a new field, the key is to stay open-minded and curious.
Step 5: Invest in Skill Development
As you research new opportunities, be prepared to invest in skill development if needed. Whether it’s taking an online course, earning a certification, or gaining new experiences, upgrading your skills is an often overlooked way to position yourself for success in your new career path.
Step 6: Create a Personalized Action Plan
Now that you have a clearer direction, it’s time to create a personalized action plan. Outline the steps you need to take to achieve your career goals. This could include networking, updating your LinkedIn profile, or setting short- and long-term goals to keep you on track. I love working with my clients on this phase because they approach it with newfound confidence.
Step 7: Build Confidence and Take Action
Finally, it’s time to take strategic action. It’s natural to feel some sense of self-doubt, so take a moment to remind yourself that you’ve already accomplished so much. Trust in your abilities, and please don’t be afraid to take that next step because you are prepared and ready to move forward.
